At 8:00 AM, a small group of supporters met at the public school in Ripley, NY.
I gave a great speech. If you don't believe me, ask me! OK, perhaps the speech. was not that great, but it was adequate, it stated the issue.
The ride started at approximately 8:40 AM. As I stopped along the way people would ask, "what is NY's
dirty little secret." 100% were surprised to find out that 60% of those convicted of raping a child in NY are not sentenced to jail or prison.
As they say, no pics - it did not happen. Here are a few picks.
Here are a few supporters. Thanks to all who showed up to the rally.
Getting ready to ride.

The motivation behind the cause, my wife. In 1996, when her abuser was convicted of abusing another young lady, she faced the pain again and went public with her abuse. Ray Hall of WJTN has called her a hero for her efforts. I agree.

Launch!

It is a beautiful state. If only we could fix it so that thousands of abused people would not have to view it through an occluded lens.

All of the folks I talked with supported my efforts. All of the people who work with the various children's programs are painfully aware of the issue at hand. Many are aware that the abuser is sometimes even granted visitation rights by the courts!

NY has a “dirty
little secret” and it is time that the secret is told. Beginning August
17th, 2007 Cecil Rhoades will ride across NY State on bicycle alerting its
inhabitants that the majority of those convicted of rape, criminal sex act,
or any other sexual assault against an adult or child in NY are not sentenced
to jail or prison. The ride will begin at the NY state line on state route
5 near Ripley, NY, and proceed Northeasterly to Niagara Falls following
bicycle route 5 most of the way to Albany. The ride is intended to catch
the attention of the politicians, where Rhoades hopes to meet with key lawmakers
on August 24th. |
